Social Media Surgery new dates

BRUNCH

Surgeries are for people involved in community activities, social enterprises or charities and are provided free by friendly volunteer surgeons, including Nick Booth (Podnosh).

A social media surgery is an informal gathering of people who want to learn how to use the web to communicate, campaign or collaborate. Surgeries are deliberately relaxed. No presentations, no jargon, no-one telling people what they think they should know.

Instead you will sit next to someone who understands good ways to use the internet, who will listen to what you do, and then help you use  free, useful tools.

They can help you set up and develop  your blog, Facebook page or Twitter account. Also you can get help with understanding what your organisation does with data or help you accessing and using public open data. Or you can just come and work on your own, with access to help if you need it.

Surgeries take place in the  Loco Lounge  at 32-34 Kings Heath High St  (Buses – 11a, 11c,  27,  35, 50, 69, 76). It’s a drop in, so feel free to turn up when it suits you, although we do finish at 7pm. By the way we’ve responded to requests for a choice of days of the week.

Please sign up here and please mention to others who might be interested.

We’re always pleased to hear your suggestions and comments.

Hello folks, the social media surgeries keep ticking along, thanks mainly to the efforts of Tom Tierney, who’s doing the admin to keep them going, plus volunteers surgeons who turn up to help and of course Loco Lounge, who let us use the upstairs room and their wi-fi.

They now also include the possibility of getting help with understanding what you’re organisation does with data and even with public open data – for a bit more see here.

The surgery runs from 5.30 to 7pm at Loco Lounge on Monday June 1st. It’s a drop in so you can turn up when suite you, although we do finish at 7pm. Please sign up here and mention to others who may not have seen this.

New dates for the Kings Heath/Moseley social media surgery – the next is Monday November 24th 2014

Using wordpres for the first time

Earlier this year we ran half a dozen social media surgeries which benefited close to 50 people form the different community and voluntary orgs in the two neighbourhoods. Above you can see Allister from Moseley in Bloom experiencing social media for the first time alongside Fionafrom the Moseley Society.

We’ve now got plans to run another half dozen – teaming up Podnosh (as part of some work we’re doing on open data skills with Digital Birmingham) with Tom Tierney from the Kings Heath Residents Forum who said he’d help us keep them ticking over.

Nathalie at Loco Lounge (the Moseley end of Kings Heath High street) has continued to offer upstairs there as a free venue for us… the dates are below and click through on the links to sign up – it helps us to know how many people to expect…

If you’ve been before please come again and bring any other active citizens, volunteers etc who you think might benefit.  If they’re new to you what to expect at a social media surgery?  This is how we describe them…

social media surgery is an informal gathering of people who want to learn how to use the web to communicate, campaign or collaborate. Surgeries are deliberately relaxed. No presentations, no jargon, noone telling people what they think they should know.

Instead you will sit next to someone who understands good ways to use the internet, someone who will listen to what you do, and then show you free, useful tools. If you like what you see they can also help you set up your blog, Facebook page or Twitter account. Most social media surgeries have an event every few weeks, so you can keep coming back for help.

Come along between 5.30 pm and 7pm – drop in if you need to and we’ll give you some relaxed personal help to get you community group using the web well.
